Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) encompasses a cluster of coronary heart disease risk factors, including abdominal obesity, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and elevated blood pressure that is associated with increased inflammatory markers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) blood pressure and inflammatory markers in patients with metabolic syndrome.

Method: Design of This study was a double-blind randomized clinical trial and the duration was three months of supplementation. CoQ10 (100 mg twice daily) or placebo was administrated to 50 subjects with the metabolic syndrome for 12 weeks. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; placebo and treatment groups. Blood pressure, homocysteine and hs-CRP as inflammatory markers were measured before and after twelve weeks of the intervention.

Results: Forty five participants with MetS completed the study. CoQ10 supplementation significantly decrease systolic blood pressure by 0.66cm Hg (p=0.04) and diastolic blood pressure by 0.31 cm Hg (p=0.001). Although there was a significant difference between groups in diastolic blood pressure after supplementation, comparing mean changes of two groups showed no significant differences. homocysteine concentration in the intervention group decreased from 11.97±2.09 to 10.31±1.93 u/ml (p<0.005) and hs-CRP declined from 4.40±3.46 to 3.64±3.25 u/ml (p=0.037).

Conclusion: CoQ10 supplementation at a dosage of 200 mg appears to decrease inflammatory markers, systolic and somehow diastolic blood pressure in patients with MetS.

Introduction: The prevalence of job-related stress has been proved to be high within the dentists in different studies. This stress, resulted from such factors as poor lightening as well as noise of dental office, can cause emotional distress, threaten dentists’ physical health and affect their quality of life. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate dentists’ professional quality of life, job-related stress and two important workplace factors of lighting and noise.

Methods: In this analytical-descriptive and cross sectional study, the researcher visited the dental offices in Shiraz and measured lighting and noise of the places. Moreover, dentist's quality of life and job stress were determined using McGill quality of life questionnaire and job-stress questionnaire. The relationship between quantitative variables was determined using regression test and the multiple regression t est was also applied for the modeling process.

Results: The local noise mean cased by the dental drills was 75.5 and 74.5 in the public and private offices, respectively. In 2.2% of the dental offices, lightening condition was reported below the standard levels. The study results revealed that 58.9% of dentists participating in this study experienced good or fairly good quality of life.

Conclusion: The study findings suggested that workplace conditions were correlated with the dentists’ professional stress and quality of life. Training how to manage this psychological disorder can significantly reduce its destructive effects and as a result, quality of life can be increased.

Introduction: Supportive periodontal treatment prevents the progress and recurrence of periodontal disease in patients previously diagnosed and treated for periodontitis, decreases tooth loss and increases the possibility for treating other diseases or conditions resulting from oral pathologies. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the frequency of patients' returns for gingival check-up after periodontal surgery at a private periodontist office in Yazd.

Methods: 365 files of the patients who had received periodontal surgery between 1996 and 2005 were randomly selected. The frequency of the patients' return to the office for periodontal check-up and their demographic features were recorded in a checklist. The study data was analyzed via SPSS software (ver,16) using descriptive statistics.

Results: The patients' files belonged to 205 females (57.6%) and 151 males (42.4%). The patients’ age ranged between 14-67 years with an average of 37.8 + 9.48 years. 281 patients (93.70%) had never returned for gingival check-up after the periodontal surgery. 42 patients (11.79%) had only returned once and 22 patients (6.7%) had returned twice after the periodontal surgery. Only 1.68% of patients had returned more than three times. No significant relationship was observed between the patients' return after periodontal surgery and their age, sex, education level and occupation.

Conclusion: Despite the importance of supportive treatment after the periodontal surgery, more than 90% of the patients never returned for the supporting treatment. Therefore, periodontitis needs to be emphasized for the patients to regularly return for periodontal check-up after periodontal surgery to maintain the results, and prevent the disease recurrence.

Introduction: Traffic accidents (T.A) are introduced as the second cause of mortality after cardiovascular diseases in Iran as well as third causes after cardiovascular disease and cancer in the developing countries. Iran about 25000 persons per year and 70 persons per day have been due to T.A. Regarding the increasing growth of population and number of transport vehicles as well as the high prevalence of T.A in all over the country specifically in Yazd, this study intended to evaluate the mortality trend caused by T.A in five years period.

Methods: This retrospective study was based on the information of the accident registration system using the statistics form of Yazd emergency medical services, accident management center, forensic center and Rahvar police. The sample size was determined via Census method all of the mortality cases of T.A(n=2492). The study data were gathered from the information of the registration forms of the dead and injured, and then was analyzed by SPSS software (ver,16). In fact, mortality trend caused by T.A was reported via Regression Poisson model.

Results: Regarding T.A mortality cases by T.A, the mortality rate has been decreased from 47.3% in 2007 to 33.7% in 2012.The majority of death cases were resulted from head trauma that have been decreased from 79.9% in 2007 to 62.3% in 2012.

Conclusion: The study findings revealed that since traffic Accidents' trend is decreasing, implementing traffic laws and regulation from one side and building a goog culture from another side are probably regarded as the main cause of decreasing accidents' trend during 2007-2012.

Introduction: Obesity leads to an increase in oxidative stress and insulin resistance.Flaxseed consumption is increasingly incorporated into the diet of individuals, in purpose of weight reduction. There are limited data on efficacy of flaxseed on improving anthropometric indices. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of flaxseed on anthropometric and oxidative stress indexes in overweight and obese prediabeticindividuals.

Methods: This study was conducted among 99prediabeticparticipants with body mass index(BMI)25-34.9.They are assigned randomly to three groups:high dose flaxseed(HD) and low dose flaxseed(LD) as intervention groups and third group as control group(C).HD receiveddaily 40 g milled flaxseed,LD receiveddaily 20 g flaxseed for 12 week and C group received no intervention.Anthropometric indicesand MDAwere measured before and after intervention.

Result: 92 individuals remained at the end of 12th week for analysis.Weight, BMI and waist circumstancesdecreased in intervention groups compared to the control group and baseline(p<0/005).Although significant differences observed in MDA in HDand C group, but this difference was not significantbetween intervention groups and control.

Conclusion: The result of present study demonstrated that consumption of both dose of flaxseed (daily 20 g and 40 g) can lower weight,BMI and waist circumstancesinprediabetic patients, but it’s not dose-dependent, but flaxseed has no significant effect on oxidative stress in prediabetes.

Introduction: Unhealthy life style causes health risks as well as non-communicative diseases in the adulthood. Theory- based educational needs assessment before-intervention can be introduced as a basis among adolescents regarding education planning in lifestyle promotion. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the influential factors in adopting lifestyle-promoting behaviors in adolescents using theory of planned behavior.

Methods: In this cross-sectional analytic study, a sample of 175 students, aged 12-15 years, were selected via multistage random sampling. In order to glean the study data, a questionnaire was utilized based on constructs of planned behavior theory with regard to adolescent's life style. The study data were analyzed using SPSS software (ver. 20) via Pearson correlation, independent t-test and multi factorial regression.

Results: The students' mean age was reported 13.5, 0.9 years. Quality of life decreased with increasing age of the students and their fathers' education level. No association was found between intention and behavior in healthy eating (P= 0.438) as well as smoking and alcohol rejection (p= 0.256). Healthy eating behavior (B=0.638) and intention (B=0.268) were most predicted by attitude. Intention in physical activity was most predicted by perceived behavioral control (B=0.244) and behavior (B=0.424) was most predicted by the subjective norms. Regarding stress management, intention was most predicted by subjective norms (B=0.455) and behavior was most predicted by the perceived behavioral control (B=0.767). In smoking and alcohol rejection, attitude (B=0.829) showed a strong association with intention and perceived behavioral control (B=0.311) revealed a strong relationship in regard with behavior.

Conclustion: Lack of association between intention and behavior demonstrated that demographic variables, except for intention, may affect behavior in adolescents. Educational interventions focusing on perceived behavioral control construct seem to be an important way to achieve the healthy behavior. Since physical activity behavior was directly affected by the subjective norms, promoting exercise behaviors in the age groups will be more successful with the family cooperation.

Introduction: Exposure to radon gas, with about two-third of background radiation, is considered as the greatest source of community irradiation, which increases the risk of lung cancer with Alpha radiation, so as it is recognized as the second cause of lung cancer in the US after smoking. Although radon evaluation has been carried out in Europe more than the developing countries, measuring radon concentration in the mines is being increased worldwide such as Ghyasy, Ishimori, Fisne and Kobal's studies in the lead mines. Since there are a noticeable number of mines as well as mine staff in Yazd province, the present study aimed to determine the concentration of radon gas in the lead and zinc mines in Yazd.

Materials and Methods: In this analytical-cross sectional field study, the radon concentration of radon of three zinc and lead mines were measured in Yazd province via active method using RAD7 device (range between 4- 400000 Bq/m3) in summer. The study data were entered into SPSS software (ver.16) and radon-created Alpha particles were measured.

Results: According to the results, the highest concentration of radon was observed in mine 3 (413.3 Bq/m3) and the lowest concentration was detected in mine 1 (57 Bq/m3) and the average radon concentration in mines 1,2,3 were 848.5, 125.83 and 1667.4 Bq/m3, respectively. In addition, the concentration mean of radon gas in workers' work place, resort area and both rest area and the outside environment of the mines were 2068.2, 219.9, and 19.75 Bq/m3, respectively. The correlation between radon gas concentration and lead mine grade was also reported -0.899.

Conclusions: The findings of the present study indicated that the concentration of radon in 62.5% places were less than the action level, 12.5% of places were higher than the action level and less than the maximum permissible limit, and only 25% of places were higher than the maximum permissible limit. The place and station of measurement were the most influential factors in regard with radon concentration in the present study.

Introduction: Congenital hypothyroidism is regarded as one of the major preventable and treatable causes of physical disorders. Therefore, the present study aimed to study the growth pattern of first 5-year life in children with congenital hypothyroidism in Yazd according to growth pattern of healthy children of World Health Organization (WHO).

Methods: This descriptive retrospective cohort study was performed on all the infants born within 2006- 2008, that had been diagnosed as a patient by a screening program. After taking inclusion and exclusion criteria into account, growth pattern of the infants' height, weight and head circumference within first 5-year of life was compared to that of normal children of WHO in terms of age and sex in 3,15,50,85, 97 percentiles.

Results: The study results revealed that pattern growth of height, weight and head circumference within girl patients was developed parallel with the growth pattern of healthy girls of WHO. Within the boys, linear pattern growth after 36 months, weight growth after 9 months and head circumference growth at 24 months was similar to the growth pattern of healthy boys of WHO.

Conclusions: The growth pattern in children with congenital hypothyroidism will develop towards normal growth pattern after treatment and medical care continuation.

Introduction: Coronary Heart Disease can be mentioned as one of the main causes of death in the world. In recent years, the role of psychological factors has been taken into account in the onset and exacerbation of cardiovascular diseases, particularly coronary artery disease. Thus, this study aimed to determine the level of perceived stress in patients with coronary heart disease as a step toward solving some problems of heart patients as well as reducing their additional costs.

Methods: In this case-control study, 250 patients with coronary artery disease, hospitalized in Afshar and Shahid Sadoughi Hospitals, were compared with 250 healthy individuals whose heart have been diagnosed to be healthy by a heart specialist. The two groups, matched in regard with their age and sex, were compared in terms of stress and stressors using the Holmes-Rahe stress scale. T-test, chi-square, Mann-Whitney and logistic regression were applied to compare the two groups in terms of variables and stress score using SPSS software (ver,16).

Results: The study results showed that patients with myocardial infarction experienced higher psychological stressors within one year prior to the heart attack. 16.4% of cases and 1.6% of the controls demonstrated stress levels of more than 300 units (P <0.001,). The risk of coronary artery disease in these groups was 20 times as much as the control group. Moreover, the most stressful events that were perceived by the subjects consisted of changes in economic conditions, changes in sleep duration and a wound or illness within the previous year.

Conclusions: In this study, heart patients were exposed to more stressors compared with the healthy subjects. In addition to the Stressor' direct effect on increasing the risk of heart disease and its aggravation, they can lead to the vicious cycle in the patients' improvement. As a result, the role of stress in cardiac rehabilitation can be further emphasized.

Introduction: Increased demand for consumption of health food with desired sensory properties has led to innovation and new product development in the food industry all over the world. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the effect of different concentrations of T. polium oil essential (EO) on chemical and organoleptic properties of Iranian white cheese.

Methods: In this study, qualitative properties (protein, fat, salt and pH) of Iranian white cheese processing with T. polium EO at different concentrations (15, 30 and 60 ppm) were evaluated during two-month ripening period (the interval within 15th). Furthermore, the sensory properties of all cheese samples were determined at the end of the ripening period.

Results: A gradual and continuous reduction was observed in pH value of all cheese samples within the cheese ripening. Cheese samples containing EO had lower pH values compared with the control cheese, so as at the end of the storage period, the lowest pH (3.38) was obtained from the cheese containing 30 ppm of EO. Moisture content of all cheeses was significantly decreased and salt as well as protein content significantly increased during the ripping, whereas the fat in dry matter (FDM) content of all cheeses did not change significantly during the storage (P<0.05). At the end of storage period, the cheese sample containing 30 ppm of EO demonstrated the lowest humidity (62.42%). Based on the findings from sensory evaluation, the best concentration of EO in regard with cheese production with organoleptic properties was 30 ppm.

Conclusion: According to the findings of the present study, T. polium EO along with other protective methods can be considered as an acceptable alternative to chemical preservatives and synthetic aromatizers. In addition, it can be used in manufacturing the food products with new flavor properties especially such highly-consumed dairy products as cheese.

Introduction: Waste production from any source would lead to the formation of various pollutants. The existence of these materials and in turn, every non-normative plan designed for waste disposal produces environmentally detrimental effects. Therefore, evaluating positive and negative effects of influential engineering- sanitary projects in environment seem to be necessary such as landfill construction for management of urban health. The present study aimed to evaluate positioning and of municipal solid waste landfills by geological information system (GIS). To this purpose, the required layers were prepared and profit sites were obtained by 3 steps: talent mapping, field survey to study characteristics of suitable areas and EIA by means of Leopold matrix for zonal ranking and selection of optimal location.

Results: To depict talent map, the layers were combined by simple additive weighting method using various data including geology, land use, distance from the city boundaries, slope, distance from roads, vegetation, infiltration and hydrology. The resulted data suggested that four sites were posited in appropriate ranks.

Conclusion: The study findings revealed, that site No.1 (X:256915 & Y:3540127) was determined as the optimum location for engineering - Sanitary landfill.

Introduction: Identification of degrading microorganisms of toxic materials is regarded as an important step to complete air treatment systems. Effective microorganisms in treatment and elimination of pollutants seems to be different depending on the type of pollutants as well as environmental conditions. Identification of these microorganisms can determine optimum conditions for the system performance and the maximum efficiency can be reached. Moreover, biotechnological methods can strengthen the microorganisms to treat the pollutants. This study aimed to identify the predominant microorganisms at two biotrickiling filters that formaldehyde was used in one and ethanol in another as the sole carbon source.

Methods: In this study, two biotrickling filter pilots were made at the laboratory scale. These microorganisms were inoculated and adapted within three months. Then biotrickling filters were studies for a long time. At the end of experiments, biofilm samples were taken from biotrickling filters and predominant microorganisms were identified via microbiology studies.

Results: The results of the present study managed to identify such microorganisms as Salmonella Bongori, Pneumonia, Subspecies Pneumonia, Klebsiella Terrigena, etc. at different parts of both biotrickling filters.

Conclusion: Microbial species can be widely changed with operating of biotrickling filters at different conditions. Identifying active microorganisms in each biotrickling filter can lead to detecting optimum conditions as well as the risks caused by transfer of the filters' available microorganisms to the human body .

Abstract

Introduction: Increasing environmental pollution by heavy metals caused serious concerns due to carcinogenic properties, their biological accumulation and inseparability. Nickel was one of the most common pollutants priority in the environment that its elimination is very important. There is several methods to remove and isolation heavy metal ions from aqueous solution that the most of these methods are used in high concentrations of metals and has disadvantages such as high cost of equipment and operations, sludge production or toxic waste, energy and high space requirements. Between these methods, the process of adsorption has attracted the attention of many fans; because a simple, low-cost and effective to remove heavy metal ions in low concentrations and average. The purpose of this study is survey the efficiency of adsorption of Nickel ions from aqueous solutions by walnut shell granule's.

Methods: This study was a fundamental and experimental research that adsorption process is interrupted, in laboratory conditions were examined, with an emphasis on the effects of various parameters such as pH, contact time, initial concentration of Nickel and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption efficiency. At each stage of tests were investigated; 100ml of solution containing specified initial concentration of Nickel and with the preferred level of pH(2-8), reaction time(10-30min), initial concentration(10-100mg/l) and the adsorbent dosage(0.1-1g), then the results was fit by Langmuir & Freundlich isotherm also first & second pseudo kinetics.

Conclusion: The results showed that the maximum efficiency of adsorption of Nickel was in the range of pH 5 to 8, adsorbent dose 0.5g/100ml and 90 minutes contact time. Moreover seen that data of adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm with a correlation coefficient of r2=0.99 and the first pseudo kinetics (R2=0.9922) & second pseudo kinetics (R2=0.9937).

Results: Based on the results of this study may suggest that walnut shell granule's is ideal as a natural adsorbent to remove Nickel from aqueous solutions. And it's recommenden because of the ability to adsorb up to other environmental contaminants.

Introduction: Head lice infection is a global health problem with a long history that led to physical, psychological and social complications which is most common between the ages of 6-11years. Regarding lack of studies in the area this study was performed to determine the prevalence of Pediculus capitis in primary school children and its preventive behaviors determinants based on Health Belief Model in Their Mothers in Hashtgerd, 2012.

Methods: The analytical cross-sectional study carried out on 372 primary school students and their mothers in Hashtgerd. Data was collected by examining the student's heads and a questionnaire which was completed by their mothers and was analyzed by SPSS-18, using Indices of central tendency and dispersion, independent t-test, Pearson correlation ratio, linear regression, and ANOVA.

Results: The prevalence of Pediculus capitis was 6.4 percent. Prevalence of head lice was significantly higher in girl students (8.6%) versus boys (0.5%) (P<0.001). There was a positive significant correlation between preventive behaviors and perceived severity, perceived benefits, and self-efficacy (P<0.05). Among preventive behaviors, cooperation of mothers with health care providers to prevent lice had the lowest frequency. Based on regression analysis, HBM constructs predicted 10.7% of variance in preventive behaviors and self-efficacy was the only statistically significant predictor of behavior (β=0.048).

Conclusion: Regarding meaningful prevalence of Pediculus capitis especially among female students, HBM-based educational programs is recommended to enhance preventive behaviors of head lice in students, parents, and school staff with an emphasize on mothers self- efficacy and also necessity of mothers cooperation with health care providers to prevent lice.

According to disadvantages for several physical and chemical methods, there are recently great deals of interest in the use of herbal extracts for control of fungal growth and aflatoxin contamination on food. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Cinnamomum zeylanicum extract on growth inhibition of aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus flavus on Almonds' kernel.

Methods: In current experimental lab-trial study almond kernel samples were randomly selected for study. Almond kernel samples were firstly immersed in edible coating containing 3% hydro-alcoholic of Cinnamomum zeylanicum extract and then contaminated with 1×103 aflatoxin producer A. flavus conidial suspensions. The extracts' inhibitory properties were evaluated using with enumeration of viable and cultivable fungal conidia on almond washing solutions. Finally MFC and MIC50 values of herbal extracts were measured by preparing of their serial dilutions that contaminated with fungal conidial suspensions using CLSI standard broth dilution method.

Results: In general, the macroscopic observation of Almond kernel treated with edible coating of 3% Cinnamomum zeylanicum extracts showed full control of fungal growth. Statistical T test showed significant differences between the mean isolated colonies from culture of washing solutions from test and control samples (P= 0.0001). The MFC and MIC50 values value for Cinnamomum extract was concentration of 187 and 94 mg/100 respectively.

Conclusion: Results of present study showed that edible coating of Cinnamomum extracts was been effective in controlling of A. flavus colonization on Almond kernels. However, the practical uses of these extracts require more, antimicrobial, toxicology and economic studies.

Introduction: Traffic accidents are recognized the main causes of fatalities and injuries, as well as a worldwide public health problem. Among the many factors that contribute to accidents, risky behavior is the most common cause of them. This study aimed to investigate factors related lack of driving discipline among Yazd city drivers in 2014.

Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study has been performed on 373 drivers of Yazd in 2014. The sampling method was convenience. Data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS16 software, using Pearson correlation tests, ANOVA, t-test and linear regression analysis.

Results: The data showed that average score of high-risk behavior was 81.41 and risk-taking attitudes and perceived risk were correlated with risky driving behavior significantly (p< 0.001). Among the variables entered into the regression model, risk-taking attitudes and risk perception could predict 35 percent of variance of risky behavior.) F= 27.2, R=0.59, R2= 0.35)

Conclusion: The results show that risky behaviors have influenced by risk-taking attitudes and perceived risk driving. So it is necessary to consider these factors in educational interventions
