  Background: Diabetes has been shown to be a metabolic disease and the fourth most common cause of death in the world. Defects in the nutrient metabolism, insulin insufficiency or resistance are some causes of diabetes mellitus. Prevalence of diabetes in Yazd province (4.7%) is‪ far more than that of the people of other areas (2.3%) in Iran. High intake of sweets containing blankyt ( Na2So2O4 ) as a bleacher can be a risk factor of diabetes incidences. This study conducted to determine the possible role of blankyt in the diabetes development.

  Methods: In the experimental model, 30 male albino rats weighing 200-250 g were assigned to 5 groups of 6. Control and treatment groups were received blankyt at doses of 0, 4, 20,100 or 200 ppm respectively. After 15, 30 and 90 days, using capillary tubes, blood was collected from the inner canthus of the eye under light ether anesthesia. Glucose concentration was measured. Data were statistically analyzed with ANOVA followed by post hoc unpaired t-test.

  Results: Our results indicated that administration of blankyt at different doses leads to a significant increase in fasting blood sugar in dose dependent manner (P=0.001).

  Conclusion :Chronic intake of blankyt dose dependently can produce hyperglycemia in normal rats. Therefore, chronic intake of blankyt may be an accelerating factor in diabetes incidences.
